“Come along, Kingston. We’re going to be late.” Chase smiled a little as Rider followed behind him, still tugging on his old leather jacket and shoes as he went. He’d always been one of those people who was late for everything. His boyfriend Chase Alteau, on the other hand, was born the polar opposite.

“I’m coming, don’t walk so fast.” Rider grumbled as he fixed his bed head. It was one of the things he disliked about Chase. He never waited for anyone. If Rider slept in, Chase walked out and left for whatever it was on his own. Their friends still joke that if Rider’s ever late for the wedding, Chase will just go ahead and marry himself.

“I’m not walking fast, you’re simply walking slow- Keep up, will you?” Teased the boy with the glasses.

“You’ve got longer legs!” Rider protested, finally catching up to walk alongside the taller male.

“And you’re still such a child.” Chase taunted, taking Rider’s hand to keep him in step as they headed across an intersection of mostly NYC taxis. The couple had been visiting for the week, simply exploring.

As they reached a less traffic-heavy part of downtown, they stopped upon hearing a loud yip behind them. Chase turned first, raising his eyebrows when he spotted what had been following them for a few blocks now.

A small, fluffy blond thing, in the form of a young puppy. One ear was adorably flopped over, the other straight up. It stopped when it reached the pair and yipped again.

Rider aww-ed.

Chase scowled.

“Go on. Don’t you have a home to get back to? Go.” Chase blinked. The puppy barked and waddled towards Chase as if he hadn’t heard him.

“No….go on. Leave me alone. I already have a dog.” Rider found Chase’s attempts with trying to communicate with the young animal adorable, to be honest. And still, the dog braved its way forward until it was standing right in front of Chase, looking at him with interest.

“….But Chase-” Rider began to say.

“But nothing. If he is a stray, then he has no place in my house, with my trained purebred dog who is perfectly okay without a mangy playmate-” Chase waved his hand dismissively but paused when he noticed the puppy tugging on his pant cuff gently.

“Hey, are you suicidal- Stop that!” Chase snapped. The dog, of course, didn’t falter. It just sat back on its little haunces with a big brown eyed look as if to say: “Your move, sir.”

“……We’re keeping him.”

“What!? ‘We?’ There isn’t a we! I’m not taking in this dog!” Chase’s eyes widened as Rider simply scooped up the young pup.

“No, but I am. He’s small-“

“He’ll get bigger. He’s young.”

“He’s friendly-“

“Really.”

“He’s the only creature I know besides me that doesn’t hide or shrivel up when you glare.” Rider finalized with a quirked eyebrow. Chase crossed his arms. After all, his boyfriend did have a valid point for once.

“….Ri-der.” Chase sighed, his exasperation splitting the name into two syllables.

“It’s decided! Come on, Kazi! Let’s go introduce you to Aunt Amelia!” Chase blinked at the idea of Rider’s mutt mingling with his pedigree dog.

“…Aunt Amelia, wait, Kazi?”

“Of course! Short for Kamikaze, duh!” Rider grinned, absolutely over-the-moon.

Chase smiled a little when he realized he’d been right. With some things, his twenty one year old boyfriend was still such a child. And every child needed a good dog at least once in his life, even if the dog was a mischievous stray and a smart aleck.
